Etre Touchy Gloves on The Gadget Show!

Posted by Simon on 25 February 2010

Yay! Etre Touchy Gloves appeared on FIVE's The Gadget Show on Monday!

In case you missed it, the show revolved around a challenge that saw presenters Suzi, Jason, Ortis and Jon unceremoniously dumped in 200 acres of snowy woodland and forced to use the latest technology to evade capture by a team of Special Forces hard men.

Suzi decided to fight (using some hi-tech weapons to fend off her pursuers), while Jason chose "flight" and Ortis elected to hide. Jon, however, decided to use his smartphone to manoeuvre his way out of the woods and into the nearest pub...using our gloves to protect his hands from the cold while doing so!

At the time of writing, you can watch the whole episode on FIVE's website.

Touchy Tip 010: Create a shortcut

If you're like most people, then you probably have a certain set of websites that you visit on your iPhone every day - you might even visit them lots of times a day. You know, your favourite news provider, sports site or webmail application, for example. If you're clever, you've probably bookmarked these sites in Safari. However, while this saves you the time and effort of having to type in their URL each time you want to visit them, activating these bookmarks still requires an unnecessary amount of tippety-tapping. From the Home screen, for example, you have to tap Safari...Bookmarks...and then the frequently-visited site's name...which isn't exactly efficient now, is it?

Which is exactly why Apple made it possible to place a shortcut to any web page you like, directly on your Home screen. Here's how...

The iPhone's standard Home screen is only large enough to hold 20 icons. That's more than enough room to display those relating to essential functions like your Phone, Email and SMS. But once you start installing programs from the App Store, space soon starts to run out and your poor old Home screen starts to get pretty cramped.

How can you alleviate this problem?

Simple: Make some more Home screens and spread your new program icons across them. Here's how...

In the olden days - the days of iPhone 1.0, that is - the only way to save a picture on a website was to stare at it until you had burnt its impression onto your retinas.

Thankfully, life is much easier these days...

Touchy Tip 005: Enable Caps Lock

Your iPhone's virtual keyboard is a helpful little fella: It appears when you need it and disappears when you don't; it suggests and corrects words as you type them; and it even adds punctuation on your behalf.

One thing it doesn't do very well, however, is help you type a string of capital letters.

This operation requires you to tap the Shift key before pressing every single letter in the word you want to capitalise. Which can be a real pain when you want to enter acronyms and abbreviations like NASA, SNAFU and USA. Or, if you just like SHOUTING at people!

What you might not know, however, is that the iPhone, does in fact, have a hidden Caps Lock feature. You just need to enable it. Here's how...

Touchy Tip 004: Tap the top

Browsing lengthy web pages on your iPhone is a bit like mountain biking - it's a lot easier to go down, than it is to go up.

Take a lengthy discussion board thread, for example. Scrolling down the page is fine. But when you reach the bottom, you find yourself faced with the RSI-inducing prospect of having to flick your way back up to the top.

Unless you know the "tap the top" trick, that is...

Touchy Tip 003: Punctuate faster

On the iPhone's virtual keyboard, the punctuation and alphabet keys appear on two different keyboard layouts. That's a real pain, because each time you want to type, say, a comma, you need to perform an awkward three-step operation: First you need to tap the Punctuation key...then the comma key...and finally, either the ABC key or the Space bar, to return to the main keyboard layout. Which is just excruciating if you do a lot of typing on your phone.

Fortunately, there's a secret way of producing such punctuation marks that involves nothing more than a single finger gesture. Allow us to explain...
